4 Tips for Direct Messaging on Social Media

If you’re going to contact someone new on social media with the goal of making a professional connection, make sure you set yourself up for success.

Social media has given us a growing number of platforms to help us build connections. Personally, I’ve met many valuable connections and I recommend that you do the same. However, there’s a way to handle the communication on social media so that both parties can benefit from the connection. That is the goal of doing business.

Keep it professional

Pretend as if you are in a professional setting in person and use the appropriate language and visuals to present yourself.

Introduce yourself As you would in a formal meeting, state your name and give a brief background on who you are and what you do to give some context.

Do your research

When contacting someone, refrain from asking questions about them or their work that can be easily found online via their social media profiles or website.

Be specific

State what the goal of the communication is. If you are looking for some information and/or guidance, state that.

While social media is a great way to meet new people, the market is saturated with many choices in platforms and people to connect with. Make your attempt at connecting worth someone’s while.
