If you are looking for a new job, looking to make a career transition or simply want to figure out what’s next, a career roadmap is necessary. It provides you with clear direction and steps you need to complete in order to accomplish your goals. There are 3 essential components it must contain in order to be effective.
Goals Your roadmap needs to contain two sets of goals. The first set are the larger goals like finding a new job. The second set of goals are smaller goals that are needed in order to accomplish the larger goal. So for example, updating a resume or contacting recruiters are smaller goals that should be written down under the big goal.
Connections Identify who you need to connect with in order to begin learning and getting additional information that will help you achieve your goals. Keep a running list of people you want to connect with. As you meet with them, ask for introductions or referrals of additional connections that could be useful to you.
Education Books, podcasts and online courses are all great resources for continuous education on your specific areas of interest. Research which ones you would benefit from the most and add them to your roadmap.
